Bangkok to Phuket is about 840 km by road, and the quickest way to cover it is a flight of roughly 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 35 minutes in the air, with one-way fares of about 1,000 to 2,500 THB (~USD 30-75) booked two to four weeks ahead. The cheapest ground option is an overnight bus at 12 to 14 hours. Flying from Bangkok to Phuket

How long is the flight and which airlines fly it?

Flight time is about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 35 minutes in the air, and one tour operator counts roughly 50 departures a day, from 06:10 until nearly midnight. Route listings give an average of 1 hour 27 minutes from Don Mueang (DMK) and about 1 hour 37 minutes from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Phuket International Airport (HKT).

The airlines split between Bangkok’s two airports:

  • Don Mueang (DMK): Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air.
  • Suvarnabhumi (BKK): Thai Airways, Thai VietJet and Bangkok Airways, plus some Thai AirAsia flights.

Search both airports on the date you want.

Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang?

Pick the airport that matches the airline and your hotel side of the city. Budget carriers such as Thai AirAsia fly mostly from Don Mueang, so a cheap fare usually means DMK. Suvarnabhumi suits travellers with a connecting international flight or a stay around Sukhumvit and Bang Na. The two airports are about 30 km apart. For getting to either one, see airport transfers in Bangkok.

What does a flight cost?

One-way fares run about 1,000 to 2,500 THB (~USD 30-75) when booked two to four weeks out, before bags. Prices climb in December and January and around Songkran, and Friday evenings and Sunday nights cost more than midweek.

What about checked bags?

Check the fare type before paying. Thai AirAsia’s lowest fare includes cabin bags only, 7 kg, while its Value Pack and Premium Flex fares include 20 kg of checked baggage, a meal and seat selection. Adding a bag in advance costs less than adding it at the airport. Thai Airways moved to a piece-based system on domestic flights from 2 March 2026, with one checked bag of 23 kg in Economy. Airline sites carry the current prices.

How long is the trip door to door?

Door to door from central Bangkok, the flight takes four and a half to five hours.

Taking the bus from Bangkok to Phuket

Where do the buses leave from?

Buses leave from two Bangkok terminals: the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) on Phutthamonthon Sai Road in Thonburi, and Mo Chit. Most services arrive at Phuket Bus Terminal 2, about 4 km north of the centre of Phuket Town. Check which terminal your ticket names on both ends.

How long does the bus take and what does it cost?

Plan on 12 to 14 hours, and one operator guide counts 13 buses daily. Fares range from 715 to 1,422 THB (~USD 22-43) by class, as listed by one tour operator on 9 October 2026:

Operator and class Terminal Departures Fare
Transport Co. express Mo Chit 06:45, 16:45, 17:25, 18:00 783 THB (~USD 24)
Transport Co. express Southern Terminal 16:30 783 THB (~USD 24)
Sombat Tour VIP 30/33 Southern Terminal 18:00, 18:50 1,223 THB (~USD 37)
Andaman Sea Tour VIP 24 Southern Terminal 17:50 1,422 THB (~USD 43)

Other sources list fares from about 600 THB, with express buses at 660 to 690 THB and VIP 24 at about 1,000 THB, so the market moves between operators and dates.

Is VIP worth the extra money?

On a VIP 24 coach there are three seats per row which gives more room for legs and elbows over 12 to 14 hours. One operator guide lists air-conditioning, snacks and blankets, with pit stops at large fuel stations. If you plan to sleep, the extra 440 to 640 THB between express and VIP is the most direct comfort upgrade on this route.

Which departure time works best?

Evening departures between 16:30 and 18:50 run overnight, so you sleep on the way. A morning bus at 06:30 to 06:45 gets you in the same day, but a full day is spent on the road. During peak season, book ahead.

Bangkok to Phuket by train: the Surat Thani combination

Is there a train to Phuket?

No. There are no direct trains from Bangkok to Phuket, and the nearest rail stop is Surat Thani (the station is at Phun Phin, about 15 km from Surat Thani town). The train option is therefore a sleeper to Surat Thani and then a bus the rest of the way. Since 19 January 2023, long-distance Southern Line trains leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal rather than Hua Lamphong, so check that your ticket and your taxi use the right station. The station and the wider network are covered in Bangkok’s rail network explained.

How long and how much?

The train leg takes about 8 hours 40 minutes to 12 hours 15 minutes depending on the service, and the whole train-plus-bus trip is 16 to 18 hours by one operator’s count (another guide says about 15 hours). Listed fares to Surat Thani:

  • 2nd-class air-conditioned sleeper: about 700 to 900 THB (~USD 21-27), with 758 THB for an upper berth and 848 THB for a lower berth on one fare listing.
  • 1st-class sleeper: 1,139 THB (upper) to 1,339 THB (lower), or 1,300 to 1,500 THB in another listing.
  • 2nd-class seat: 598 THB. 3rd-class seat: 257 THB.

Add the bus leg (about 180 to 500 THB) to get the total.

What does the trip look like in practice?

Most useful sleepers leave Bangkok in the evening and reach Surat Thani between about 03:00 and 08:00 the next morning. Train numbers named in operator guides include 83, 85, 167 and 173. Departure and arrival times differ between sources, so check the State Railway of Thailand timetable for the exact date. A combined train and bus ticket can be bought online or at the foreign-traveller window at the station.

How do you get from Surat Thani station to Phuket?

The bus from Phun Phin to Phuket takes about 4 to 6 hours depending on the source (one guide counts 3 hours, another about 6) and costs about 180 to 500 THB (~USD 5-15). One operator lists departures at 06:40, 07:20, 09:20, 10:20 and 13:45, with a fare of 370 THB. Because the morning train often arrives before the first bus, the wait is part of the plan. A taxi from the station to the bus stop takes about 15 minutes.

Who should choose this route?

Choose the train combination if you want a sleeper berth, if you like rail travel, or if you want to see Surat Thani on the way. If the only goal is Phuket on a budget, the direct bus is simpler. For other ways to use Bangkok as a springboard to regional destinations, see Bangkok as a base for Southeast Asia travel.

Driving or hiring a car from Bangkok to Phuket

The drive is about 840 to 850 km on Route 4 and takes 10 to 12 hours. A private car costs USD 180 to 280 per car, according to one operator, and another guide quotes a wider USD 63 to 400 depending on vehicle type. It suits a group sharing the cost or travellers with a lot of luggage.

How do you get from Phuket airport to town?

Budget for the last stretch from Phuket International Airport:

  • Smart Bus to Patong: 100 THB flat (~USD 3), 1 h 20 to 1 h 30, every 30 minutes from 09:00 to 22:00.
  • Metered taxi to Patong: 600 to 700 THB on the meter plus a 100 THB airport fee (700-800 THB total, ~USD 21-24), about 50 minutes.
  • Fixed-rate limousine counter: about 800 THB (~USD 24).
  • Grab: around 850 THB (~USD 26), higher at surge times.

Drive times from the airport in normal traffic: Old Town 46 minutes, Patong 50, Karon 57, Kata 59 and Rawai about an hour. These figures come from a 2026 route guide and should be checked before you rely on them.

Which should you choose?

  • Short on time or travelling with kids: fly. Four and a half to five hours door to door beats the next best option by a wide margin.
  • Tightest budget: overnight express bus at about 783 THB (~USD 24).
  • Wanting to sleep properly: a VIP 24 bus with three seats per row, or a train berth to Surat Thani.
  • Travelling in December, January or around Songkran: book any mode early. Flights spike in those windows, and buses should be booked ahead in peak season.
  • Wanting a stop on the way: the train to Surat Thani, followed by the bus.

Phuket’s dry season runs from November to April, and the peak season is December to February, so crowds and fares rise together.

Common mistakes on this route

  • Booking Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi by mistake and discovering the airports are about 30 km apart.
  • Buying the cheapest flight fare and finding that the checked bag costs more than expected.
  • Not checking which Phuket bus terminal a ticket arrives at (Terminal 2 for most services).
  • Going to Hua Lamphong for a long-distance train, when Southern Line services leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat.
  • Expecting a morning train arrival to connect straight to a bus, when the first listed bus leaves at 06:40 or later.
  • Comparing only the ticket price, without the transfer to the airport and from Phuket airport to the beach.

Pick the area before the hotel

Traffic and heat make Bangkok distances feel longer than they look on a map, so the area shapes a trip more than the hotel does. Our guides match areas to trip types and explain the trade-offs.
