Bangkok BKK Airport: Arrival and Departure Level by Level
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) explained floor by floor: arrivals, immigration, SIMs, taxis and train, departures check-in, SAT-1, free water and where to check status.

On this page
BKK is the IATA code for Suvarnabhumi Airport (ICAO code VTBS), Bangkok’s main international airport, which opened on 28 September 2006. It is one big terminal building plus a satellite building called SAT-1, and the easiest way to understand it is by floor: arrivals land on Level 2 and ground transport waits on Level 1 and Level B, while check-in and departures sit on Level 4. This guide walks the airport in the order you meet it, on arrival and on departure. Details were checked on 9 October 2026.
What is the airport code for Bangkok, and what is the airport called?
Bangkok has two commercial airports. Suvarnabhumi uses the codes BKK (IATA) and VTBS (ICAO). Don Mueang, the older airport, uses DMK and VTBD. The BKK code originally belonged to Don Mueang and was reassigned to Suvarnabhumi when the new airport replaced it in September 2006. Don Mueang reopened on 24 March 2007 and is now a hub for budget flights.
The name is Sanskrit: Suvarna means gold and Bhumi means land, so “golden land”. Sources credit King Bhumibol Adulyadej with choosing it. If you search in Indonesian, “bandara bangkok” and “bandara bangkok suvarnabhumi” mean the same airport: “bandara” is the Indonesian word for airport. When you book “flights to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport”, check that the ticket says BKK and not DMK.
The airport is big. Airports of Thailand (AOT) reported 59,626,075 passengers between October 2025 and August 2026, across 118 scheduled airlines. Since opening, it has handled nearly 900 million passengers.
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi map: how the levels fit together
Think of the main terminal as a stack of floors. This text map comes from a traveller guide, so confirm it against the signs when you are inside.
| Level | What is there |
|---|---|
| Level 4 | Departures: airline check-in, security, outbound immigration, gates |
| Level 3 | Shops, restaurants, lounges |
| Level 2 | Arrivals hall after customs: SIM counters, ATMs, rental cars, AOT Limousine counters |
| Level 1 | Taxis, buses, ride-hailing pickup |
| Level B | Airport Rail Link station, ATMs, restaurants, a SIM counter, a capsule hotel |
The satellite building SAT-1 (gates S101 to S128 on the signs) sits apart from the main building. It soft-opened on 28 September 2023, has 28 contact gates, and is linked to the main terminal by an automated people mover. The King and Queen presided over its grand opening, together with the third runway, in March 2025. AOT says it adds capacity for about 15 million more passengers a year.

If your flight leaves from SAT-1, your boarding pass or the departures screens will show an S gate.
Arriving at BKK: from the aircraft to the street
The arrival sequence is immigration, then baggage claim, then customs. Immigration, baggage claim and customs are on the second floor, and you come out into the arrivals hall on the same level.

What do you need before you land?
Every non-Thai national must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before arrival. It became mandatory from 1 May 2025 according to most sources, but sources conflict on the date, so confirm it on the official immigration site. You can submit it up to 3 days before arrival, including the arrival day. The official submission is free. Thai authorities warned in August 2026 about third-party arrival-card websites. The official address is tdac.immigration.go.th.
Travellers aged 12 and over must be able to show sufficient funds for their stay, and JAL recommends carrying a return or onward ticket. For the rules that apply to your passport, see the official immigration pages before you fly.
How slow is immigration?
It depends on the hour. In August 2026 the government quoted peak volumes of up to 190,000 passengers a day and 140,000 to 150,000 off-peak, with 5,000 to 6,000 arrivals an hour reaching the immigration halls between 1:00 and 5:00 pm. Immigration hall space is split across three entry zones, and officials said a central hall would take overflow in busy periods.

Automated passport gates are the main change. AOT reported 106 of 122 planned automated border control machines installed, with arrivals processing for passports from 34 countries and departure e-passport processing for over 90 countries. A further 31 nationalities were approved in principle in August 2026, with sign-off expected later that month. Returning visitors with existing Thai immigration records can use the gates right away. First-time arrivals still give biometrics at a manned desk first.
Baggage claim and customs
After immigration, follow the signs to your belt. At customs, use the green lane if you have nothing to declare and the red lane if you do.

SIM cards and cash on arrival
Staffed AIS, True and dtac booths are in the Level 2 arrivals hall, with another SIM counter on Level B. Staff register your passport. Airport tourist SIMs typically cost THB 299 to 799 (~USD 8 to 23, checked October 2026). A March 2026 roundup recorded AIS airport packages at THB 399, 699 and 999, and True-dtac packages at THB 399 for 8 days, THB 599 for 10 days and THB 899 for 30 days. These are airport snapshots, not a price list.
Buying in town is cheaper: one roundup puts city prices (such as 7-Eleven) at THB 299 to 599. All three operators also sell eSIM versions of their tourist plans. True and dtac are now one company, but both still have their own booths.
Some booths take only cash, and airport ATMs charge about THB 220 per withdrawal. For more on ride apps once you are online, see best transport apps in Bangkok.
How do you get from BKK into the city?
Our full comparison is in airport to city Bangkok. In short, the airport has four routes, each on a different level.

- Taxi (Level 1): take a queue ticket from a machine and wait at the inner kerb, typically between Gates 4 and 7. The fare is metered, plus a THB 50 airport surcharge and any tolls. For how meters and surcharges work, read Bangkok taxi fares explained.
- Ride-hailing (Level 1): pickup is around Gate 4 according to one guide.
- Airport Rail Link (Level B): runs roughly 5:30 am to midnight. Phaya Thai costs THB 45 (about 30 minutes), and short trips start at THB 15. At Phaya Thai (A8) you can change to the BTS, and at Makkasan (A6) to the MRT Blue Line.
- Bus and minivan (Level 1): buses and public vans are available. The board listed routes 549 (Minburi), 552 (On Nut), 552A (Pak Nam), 554 and 559 (Rangsit), 555 (Don Mueang) and 558 (Rama II Central).

AOT Limousine counters on Level 2 are open 24 hours. Road traffic peaks roughly 7:00 to 9:30 am and 4:30 to 7:30 pm. If your final stop is not near the BTS or MRT, the train adds a second leg, and our transport cost breakdown shows how the legs add up.
Is Bangkok airport safe? Scams and touts
The main risk reported is at the curb. Older reports from the Bangkok Post and Khaosod English (2015 to 2016) warn tourists not to trust touts, and advise using the official queue, the kiosk ticket and the meter. Keep your queue ticket in case you need to complain. The airport complaint line quoted in those reports is 02-132-9199. Check that number before relying on it.
Departing from BKK: Level 4 step by step
Departures are on Level 4. Check-in counters are grouped in zones, and one guide lists zones A to W, so check your airline’s zone on the departures screens before you queue. How many counters are open varies by airline and day.

How early should you arrive?
One guide advises 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one, with extra buffer in high season and holidays. Another traveller reports about 90 minutes from arriving at the terminal to being airside. Check-in cut-offs are set by your airline, and one source gives about 60 minutes before departure, so read your own ticket.
Security, immigration and gates
For international flights, the security scan takes place before you reach the concourses with the international gates. After check-in, go to outbound immigration. Departure e-passport processing is available for passports from over 90 countries.
Airside, there are restaurants and shops. A VAT refund counter is listed among the airport’s services.
Water, charging and rest
Free drinking water dispensers with hot and cold water are available inside the airport, and one guide places hot and cold water points near the toilets after security. Free Wi-Fi, free phone charging stations, prayer rooms and free shuttle buses between terminals are also listed. Use caution with USB charging ports. AOT says it has added over 200 charging points and is renovating 124 toilets, of which 69 are done and the rest are due by 2028.
Is the water at Bangkok airport safe to drink?
The filtered drinking water stations are described by one guide as safe to use, . AOT and the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority have also signed an agreement to upgrade the airport’s water system. No official statement on tap water was found, so stick to the filtered dispensers or bottled water.
Practical questions about BKK
Where is the post office and the immigration office?
A travel listing includes a post office, a police station and a medical clinic among the airport’s services. Ask at an information counter or check the terminal directory on arrival. Arrivals immigration is on the second floor, and outbound immigration is on the departures level (Level 4).
Is there a free shuttle between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang?
Yes, but only for passengers with a same-day connecting flight. It departs from Level 2 Gate 3, runs from about 5 am to midnight every 30 to 60 minutes, and takes 1 to 2 hours depending on traffic. Bring a boarding pass or ticket for the same-day flight, .
Where can you sleep or rest?
There is a capsule hotel, Avagard, on Level B. Check availability and prices with the hotel directly. Lounges are on Level 3.
Bangkok airport news today: protests, strikes and live status
The best live source is the Airports of Thailand website and app, plus your airline’s own flight status page. No static article can show a live board.
Past disruptions exist. In November 2008, protesters occupied the airport, all flights were cancelled, and about 350,000 passengers were stranded. If you see a protest or strike warning for your travel date, watch your airline’s app and Thai news outlets, and allow extra time.
Recent notable news: Suvarnabhumi marked its 20th anniversary on 28 September 2026. Thai AirAsia plans to resume Suvarnabhumi service in October 2026, after a 10-week suspension since mid-July 2026.
