Medical tourism cost in Bangkok isn’t one number: it’s six very different price bands depending on the procedure, ranging from a few hundred dollars for a routine dental filling to tens of thousands for cardiac surgery. What changes the number more than anything else is the specific procedure category, the hospital tier, and what a quoted package actually includes, not a single citywide “savings percentage.” This guide puts dental, eye, orthopaedic, cardiac, cosmetic and fertility treatment on one dated table so you know what you’re actually comparing.

Why “50-80% savings” is true and also misleading

Thailand’s medical tourism sector, and Bangkok’s private hospitals specifically, are routinely marketed with a headline savings claim somewhere in the range of 50 to 80 percent against US, UK or Australian prices. It’s not fabricated: for many procedures, particularly lab- or device-intensive ones like dental implants and joint replacement, the gap really is that large. But a single percentage flattens six procedures with very different cost structures, very different risk profiles and very different price transparency into one marketing number. The rest of this guide is the version of that claim broken back out by procedure, which is the only version worth planning around.

The price table: six procedures, one page

These are dated, indicative ranges only, for a single straightforward case at a private Bangkok hospital or clinic, checked September 2026. Complexity, surgeon choice and hospital tier move every one of these ranges; treat the spread as the point, not a target.

Procedure category Bangkok range (THB, ~USD) Comparable Western range (USD) What’s usually included
Dental (single implant) 27,000-68,000 THB (~795-2,000 USD) 3,200-5,800 USD Implant, abutment and crown at many clinics; imaging and lab fees sometimes separate

What’s usually included, and what quietly isn’t

A quoted number is only useful once you know its boundaries. Across all six categories, the pattern repeats:

  • Almost always included: the procedure itself, the surgeon’s fee, standard anaesthesia where relevant, the immediate hospital stay, and a defined number of follow-up visits.
  • Sometimes included, always worth asking: pre-operative imaging and lab work, medication during the stay, a single room upgrade.
  • Rarely included: flights, extended accommodation before or after discharge, a travelling companion’s costs, physiotherapy beyond a stated course, revision or touch-up procedures, and anything related to a complication.

Get an itemised written breakdown before comparing two quotes against each other. Two hospitals quoting the “same” procedure at different prices are frequently quoting a different bundle, not a different quality of care.

A worked example: reading two quotes side by side

Take a single dental implant, since it’s the category with the widest gap between a headline number and the real one. Say Quote A comes back at 27,000 THB and Quote B at 68,000 THB, both for “a dental implant.” Both figures sit inside the sourced range above, and both could be entirely honest quotes for entirely different things.

Quote A might cover only the implant post itself, with the abutment, the crown, imaging and the lab fee for the crown billed as separate line items once treatment starts. Quote B might be a single all-in figure covering the implant, abutment, crown, a 3D scan and two follow-up visits, with a written warranty on the implant component. Read side by side with nothing else to go on, Quote A looks like the better deal. Read with the full scope, Quote B might work out cheaper once every piece Quote A bills separately is added back in, or it might genuinely be the pricier option once you compare like for like. The only way to know is the same question every time: what exactly is and isn’t in this number.

The same logic scales up to cardiac and fertility treatment, where the gaps between a bare-procedure quote and an all-in package figure are proportionally even larger, since ICU days, medication protocols and genetic testing are the kind of line items that get added or dropped depending on what a facilitator’s headline number is built to advertise.

Why hospital tier moves the price more than the procedure does

Within any single procedure row above, the actual spread you’ll see quoted comes down mostly to which of Bangkok’s hospital tiers you’re pricing. An international-patient-oriented private hospital, a Thai private hospital serving mainly the domestic market, and a university or specialist clinic can each quote meaningfully different figures for comparable clinical work, largely reflecting overhead, interpreter services and concierge support rather than a different surgical outcome. Every private hospital operating in Thailand is licensed by the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Health Service Support, and many in the international-patient tier additionally hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation; checking both is a better signal of standards than price tier alone. The tiers themselves, and how to judge one against another, are covered in the comparison of JCI, private and public hospitals.

How price-transparent is each category

Some procedure categories publish clean, comparable pricing; others genuinely can’t, because the case-by-case variation is too wide for a headline figure to mean much. This is an editorial judgement, not a hospital rating, based on how consistently sourced ranges converge across public listings for each category.

Price transparency by procedure category
Dental (implant)
4 out of 5
Orthopaedic (joint replacement)
4 out of 5
Cosmetic (breast augmentation)
3.5 out of 5
Eye surgery (LASIK) technique-dependent, see the dedicated LASIK guide
3.5 out of 5
Fertility (IVF) cycle-based, add-ons vary widely
2.5 out of 5
Cardiac (bypass, angioplasty) widest spread: stent type, ICU days and surgeon tier all move the number
2 out of 5

Editorial rating, 1 to 5, based on how tightly published ranges converge across public listings. Not a rating of clinical quality.

Cardiac and fertility sit lowest because the case mix genuinely varies more (a single stent versus a triple bypass, the same cost spread the heart surgery cost guide covers in detail; one IVF cycle versus three with donor material), not because those hospitals are less honest than dental or orthopaedic providers.

Budgeting beyond the procedure itself

The line-item price is rarely the whole trip cost. Build in, separately:

  1. Flights, both the initial trip and, for anything needing a second visit (dental implants, a staged orthopaedic plan), a possible return.
  2. A recovery stay. Some procedures need days to weeks of local recovery before flying is advisable; budget accommodation for that window, not just the hospital nights.
  3. A companion’s costs, if your recovery needs one: their flight, accommodation and time.
  4. Insurance and contingency. Confirm whether your policy covers planned treatment abroad, complications, or neither; the mechanics are covered in the health insurance guide. A contingency fund for a complication or an extended stay is not optional planning, it’s the realistic version of planning.
  5. Follow-up at home. A local check-up or scan once you’re back, even a routine one, is an extra cost most facilitator pages never mention.

The honest risks of choosing purely on price

The cheapest quote in any category is not automatically the wrong choice, but choosing on price alone, without checking what it excludes, is where medical tourism trip budgets and outcomes both go wrong. A price meaningfully below the ranges above for a genuinely comparable procedure is a reason to ask more questions, not fewer: what’s excluded, who specifically performs the procedure, and what happens if something needs correcting after you’ve flown home. None of the procedures on this page are risk-free, and no honest provider prices a guarantee into the quote. This caution applies even more to procedure categories not covered in the six-item table above, such as bariatric weight-loss surgery, cancer treatment and stem cell and regenerative treatments, where eligibility screening, a second opinion or regulatory status matter as much as price.

How Bangkok compares to other medical tourism destinations

Bangkok is one of several established medical tourism hubs in Asia, alongside destinations in India, Malaysia and elsewhere, and it doesn’t uniformly undercut all of them. Bangkok’s specific strengths, repeatedly cited across aggregator overviews, are hospital density, English-language service infrastructure and flight connectivity, rather than being the single cheapest option on every procedure worldwide. If cost alone is the deciding factor for a specific procedure, it’s worth a quick comparative check against other hubs before committing; if service quality, language support and direct flights matter as much as price, Bangkok’s case is usually stronger than a pure cost comparison suggests.

Questions to ask before you book anything

  • What exactly does this quote include, and what’s billed separately?
  • What happens, cost and process, if I need a follow-up procedure after I’ve flown home?
  • Is this figure a real quote after review of my case, or a general estimate?
  • What’s the realistic total recovery timeline, and does it fit my travel plans?
  • Who specifically performs the procedure, and what’s their experience with it?

If a video consultation could answer some of these before you commit to travel, the guide to telemedicine versus an in-person Bangkok clinic covers what that first conversation can and can’t cover remotely.

Common questions

Is the “50-80% savings” figure accurate?

It’s directionally accurate for several procedures, particularly dental and orthopaedic work, but it’s a headline average across very different cost structures. Some categories (cardiac, fertility) show a narrower real-world saving once every cost is accounted for; check the specific procedure, not the citywide claim.

Why do two Bangkok hospitals quote such different prices for what sounds like the same procedure?

Usually because the quotes bundle different things: one may include every follow-up visit and pre-op test, the other may price the procedure alone. Hospital tier, surgeon experience and equipment generation also move the number. Ask for an itemised breakdown before comparing.

Which procedure on this page has the most reliable published pricing?

Dental implants and joint replacement show the tightest, most consistent ranges across public sources, largely because the procedures themselves vary less case to case. Cardiac surgery shows the widest spread, since a single stent and a triple bypass are entirely different cost events both loosely labelled “cardiac.”

Should I book the cheapest quote I find?

Not automatically. A quote meaningfully below the ranges here for a genuinely equivalent procedure is a reason to ask what it excludes, not a reason to book faster. Balance price against what’s included, who performs the procedure, and what the plan is if something needs correcting later.
