Bumrungrad Bangkok: Who It Suits and When to Skip It

Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok: 580 beds, JCI since 2002, free interpreters, 24-hour emergency, 2026 check-up pricing and cheaper alternatives.

Bumrungrad International Hospital is a private, 580-bed hospital at 33 Sukhumvit Soi 3 in central Bangkok, and it is the best-known destination in Thailand for foreign patients. It was the first hospital in Asia accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI), in 2002, and it reports more than 520,000 international patients a year (2018 figure). It suits travellers and expats who want an English-speaking, one-building system with many specialists, and who accept paying a premium for it. It is a poor fit for a simple, low-risk problem where a smaller private hospital or a clinic would cost far less.

What is Bumrungrad International Hospital?

Bumrungrad opened on 17 September 1980 as a 200-bed hospital. It is run by Bumrungrad Hospital Public Company Limited, listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand since 15 December 1989 under the symbol BH. Today the licensed capacity is 580 inpatient beds (Bumrungrad investor relations, company profile).

Scale is the main reason people choose it. Wikipedia reports more than 1.1 million patients a year (2018), and the company’s investor page counts over 656,000 international medical episodes from more than 180 countries in 2023. These are different measures and years, so do not compare them directly.

The group is expanding rather than shrinking: a Phuket hospital project estimated at over 4.3 billion baht is targeted to open by the end of 2027 (Bumrungrad Q2 2025 results release). That is a separate site, not part of the Bangkok campus.

Is Bumrungrad accredited, and what does that mean for you?

Yes. Wikipedia states it was the first hospital in Asia to earn JCI accreditation, in 2002, and that it has been re-accredited five consecutive times since. Accreditation tells you the hospital follows a recognised safety framework. It does not predict the result of any single operation or guarantee that one doctor is better than another.

For the wider comparison of JCI hospitals, other private hospitals and public hospitals, see JCI vs private vs public hospitals. For a method that works for any Bangkok hospital, see choosing a hospital.

Who is Bumrungrad best for?

It fits some situations clearly better than others.

  • Complex or multi-specialist problems. If you may need a cardiologist, a scan and a surgeon within a week, having them in one campus saves days of coordination.
  • Visitors with no Thai. The hospital says it employs more than 100 full-time international interpreters and that interpreter service is free of charge.
  • Second opinions before big decisions. Many foreigners come with a diagnosis from home and want a review. Bring your records and imaging.
  • Executive check-ups. The hospital runs a large check-up centre, covered further below.
  • People who prefer paying a single hospital bill. The package model is designed for patients who settle directly with the hospital.

It fits less well if you need an inexpensive routine service such as a simple blood test, a common minor illness, a repeat prescription or a dental clean. A walk-in clinic or a mid-priced hospital may do that for much less.

How does the hospital work for foreign patients?

Booking. Book by appointment through the hospital and confirm the doctor and date with it directly.

Arrival. New patients are asked to arrive 30 minutes before the appointment and to bring a list of current medications or herbal remedies. Registration is at the Sky Lobby (10th floor of the BI Clinic building) or on the 2nd floor of the BI Hospital building. Patients under 20 must be accompanied by a parent or official guardian.

Getting there. Parking is very limited, so the hospital advises the BTS or a taxi. It runs a free shuttle van, seven days a week, from BTS Nana (street level near Exit 1) every 20 to 30 minutes, with a separate hourly route from BTS Phrom Phong (Bumrungrad shuttle page). From BTS Ploenchit Exit 3, the hospital’s directions page describes a walk of about 200 metres after the Soi 1 turn. Airport pick-up is offered at Suvarnabhumi only, for an extra charge; Don Mueang has none. Confirm shuttle times with the hospital.

Language. The hospital says free full-time interpreters are available.

Stays. One relative can stay with you in a single room. Companions who want a hotel instead can look at hotels near Bangkok hospitals. The hospital also runs a weekly visa extension service on site for patients holding a doctor’s medical certificate.

Payment. The hospital accepts most major credit and debit cards, cashier’s cheques, bank transfer and e-payments. Cash must be Thai baht, and personal cheques are not accepted.

How much does Bumrungrad cost?

There is no single “Bumrungrad price list” worth quoting for a whole hospital. Costs depend on the doctor, tests, room and drugs, and a bill can differ a lot between two people with the same diagnosis. What can be priced up front is the package. Prices below were checked on 9 October 2026, converted at roughly 34 baht per US dollar.

Item Indicative price Source and caveat
Check-up packages, promotional brochure, Feb to Mar 2026 roughly 23,000 to 75,000 baht (~$675 to $2,210) across men’s and women’s packages Hospital brochure, extracted text; match each price to a package name yourself
Executive-style packages, brochure, Apr to Jun 2026 around 31,000 to 46,000 baht (~$910 to $1,350) Hospital brochure; promotion period only
Basic male package at other private hospitals Vejthani 4,900 baht ($145), Bangkok Hospital 5,400 baht ($160), Samitivej 7,500 baht (~$220) Thailand Starter Kit comparison, undated

Read these numbers with care. The brochure figures are promotional and the text extraction was not cleanly aligned to package names, so treat them as an order of magnitude, not a quote. The hospital’s official check-up page says its package prices are per person, in baht, include the doctor’s fee, are valid until 31 December 2026 and may change without notice, and apply to patients who pay the hospital directly with no further discounts. It also says pre-payment is required, add-ons must be bought on the same day, and a package can be used within 365 days of purchase.

No current Bumrungrad price for a consultation, a day in a room, an operation or an emergency visit is given here: ask the hospital for a written estimate. For treatment costs by procedure across Bangkok, see medical tourism cost in Bangkok by procedure.

Thailand’s Internal Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce posts prices of medical services and drugs from private hospitals (Bangkok Post 2021, Healthcare IT News 2019). Use it as a cross-check, not a guarantee, and verify current prices with the hospital.

Why Bumrungrad usually costs more

The check-up prices in the table sit well above the basic packages of other private hospitals. Do not assume the gap is the same for every service. If you want to see how the field looks for check-ups specifically, read executive health check-up packages in Bangkok.

What does the check-up centre offer?

The 2026 package list on the hospital’s site names these families: Regular, Executive, Executive Wellness, Comprehensive, Comprehensive Advance, Comprehensive Vitality, Holistic and Vitality Plus Genes. Add-ons must be bought on the same day as the package.

For details, see Bumrungrad specialty centers explained and the Bumrungrad price list and check-up.

Names are marketing, not standards. Ask for the itemised test list and compare it line by line, and check what is a package item and what is an add-on.

What happens in an emergency at Bumrungrad?

The Emergency Center is open 24 hours a day, every day, in Building B, ground floor, South Wing. The hospital lists 24-hour emergency physicians, a surgical team, a trauma centre and 24-hour cardiac catheterisation. It also lists an ambulance and a heliport.

Numbers. The hospital gives +66 2066 8888 (24-hour contact centre) and 1378 (Thailand only, covering emergencies, appointments and ambulance). Thailand’s national ambulance number is 1669.

Emergency fees and deposits are not stated here, so ask when you call, and keep your insurer’s emergency contact handy. For what to do before and after you reach any hospital, see what to do in a medical emergency in Bangkok.

Insurance, records and other practical questions

Insurance. The hospital publishes an “Insurance We Accept” page, but its FAQ does not say whether direct billing works for your policy. Ask your insurer and the hospital’s international office before treatment which of them guarantees payment, and what cap applies.

Medical records. The hospital’s contact menu lists a “Medical Record Request” page. Submit the request through that page or the main number, and do it before you fly home if follow-up care will happen elsewhere.

Contact. The main line is +66 2066 8888 (24 hours).

Is there a Bumrungrad hospital in Pattaya?

No Bumrungrad hospital in Pattaya was found. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya is part of the Bangkok Dusit group, a different company. Check which hospital a listing names before booking. Bumrungrad’s own pages describe the Bangkok campus and a planned Phuket hospital.

When does a cheaper hospital make more sense?

Choose differently if one of these applies.

  1. The problem is minor and clear. A cold, a rash that your pharmacist or a general clinic can assess, a routine vaccine or a travel-health check does not need a 580-bed hospital.
  2. You want a basic screening only. The comparison above shows basic packages at other private hospitals in the 4,900 to 7,500 baht range, against promotional packages at Bumrungrad that start much higher.
  3. You are on a budget with no insurance. A public or lower-priced private hospital may cost less. Ask each hospital what it offers.
  4. You live elsewhere in Bangkok. A closer hospital can be better for repeat visits.
  5. You need ongoing care for a stable condition. A local specialist or clinic near home may suit repeat visits better than a big international hospital.

For a side-by-side of accreditation and cost across tiers, start with JCI vs private vs public hospitals.

A checklist before you go

  1. Book by appointment and ask the hospital to confirm the doctor, the date and an estimate in writing.
  2. Gather your records, a list of medications (generic names) and any recent scans.
  3. Ask whether your insurer will guarantee payment, and whether you pay first and claim later.
  4. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early and ask what ID to bring.
  5. Ask for printed results, discharge notes and a medical certificate if you need one for flights or visas.
  6. Keep the hospital’s 24-hour number, your insurer’s emergency line and 1669 saved on your phone.
