LASIK Eye Surgery in Bangkok: Comparing the Price Tiers
Standard LASIK, Femto-LASIK and ReLEx SMILE in Bangkok decoded: what actually differs, who qualifies, and dated indicative THB price ranges.

On this page
Bangkok LASIK prices span roughly 50,000 to 115,000 THB (about 1,470-3,380 USD) for both eyes, and the reason two clinics quote wildly different numbers for what both call “LASIK” usually comes down to which of three distinct techniques they mean. Get the technique clear first; the price comparison only makes sense after that.
The three techniques, decoded
“LASIK” gets used as a catch-all, but Bangkok clinics are usually selling one of three distinct procedures, and the difference isn’t marketing, it’s mechanical.
- Standard LASIK uses a mechanical blade (a microkeratome) to cut the corneal flap, then an excimer laser reshapes the cornea underneath. It’s the oldest of the three and the least expensive.
- Femto-LASIK replaces the blade with a femtosecond laser for the flap cut, then uses the same excimer laser step to reshape. Bladeless flap creation is generally considered more precise and predictable than a mechanical blade.
- ReLEx SMILE skips the flap entirely. A femtosecond laser shapes and removes a small disc of tissue (a lenticule) through a small incision a few millimetres wide, reshaping the cornea without ever lifting a flap.
Broadly, LASIK (standard or Femto) treats a wider range of prescriptions, including higher degrees of long-sightedness; SMILE is currently used mainly for short-sightedness and some astigmatism. A qualified ophthalmologist matches the technique to your prescription and cornea, not the other way round.

Who’s eligible, before price even matters
None of the three techniques suit everyone, and a real quote only follows a proper pre-operative work-up: corneal topography (mapping the cornea’s shape) and pachymetry (measuring its thickness) at minimum. If you only need a new prescription, see our guide to prescription glasses in Bangkok.
General eligibility (typical clinic criteria, confirm with your own exam):
- Usually 18 or older; many clinics prefer 21+, once a prescription has settled
- Prescription stable (commonly discussed as within about 0.5 dioptre) for at least a year
- Adequate corneal thickness; thin corneas can rule out LASIK specifically and push a candidate toward SMILE or non-laser alternatives instead
- No keratoconus (progressive corneal thinning) or severe dry eye
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding, since hormonal changes can shift vision temporarily
- Certain autoimmune conditions and some medications (isotretinoin among them) are flagged as caution or exclusion criteria by most clinics

A clinic that skips straight to a price quote without this work-up, or promises a technique before examining your eyes, is a clinic to be cautious of.
What each technique costs in Bangkok
These are dated, indicative ranges only, drawn from public aggregator and clinic listings and checked September 2026, for both eyes together. Treat them as a planning starting point, not a quote.
| Technique | Typical Bangkok range (both eyes) | What’s usually included |
|---|---|---|
| Standard LASIK | 51,000-68,000 THB (~1,500-2,000 USD) | Pre-op exam, surgery, standard follow-up visits |
| Femto-LASIK | 60,000-115,000 THB (~1,760-3,380 USD) | Bladeless flap, pre-op mapping, surgery, follow-up |
| ReLEx SMILE | 61,000-109,000 THB (~1,790-3,210 USD) | Femtosecond laser only, pre-op mapping, surgery, follow-up |
One named example, cited factually and not as an endorsement: Bangkok Eye Hospital’s own 2026 promotional listing put FemtoLASIK from 52,000 THB for both eyes, discounted off a stated 78,000 THB list price. That single figure sits inside the broader range above, which is exactly the point: a headline number from one clinic’s promotion isn’t the market rate, it’s one data point in it.
- Standard LASIK
- 51,000-68,000 THB
- Femto-LASIK
- 60,000-115,000 THB
- ReLEx SMILE
- 61,000-109,000 THB

Package inclusions vary more than the headline number suggests: some quotes bundle pre-op mapping and every follow-up visit, others price the surgery alone and bill tests and follow-ups separately. Ask for a full itemised breakdown before comparing two clinics’ numbers against each other.
Recovery time by technique
Recovery follows the same logic as the flap: less disruption to the cornea’s surface generally means a faster early recovery, though final visual stability takes similar time across all three.

| Technique | Early recovery | Full visual stability |
|---|---|---|
| Standard LASIK | A few days; most return to normal activity within a week | Commonly 3-6 months |
| Femto-LASIK | 1-2 days; many patients are cleared to drive around 24 hours after | Commonly 3-6 months |
| ReLEx SMILE | The small incision often heals within a day; may carry lower early dry-eye risk | Commonly 3-6 months |
If you’re flying in specifically for this procedure, recovery time interacts directly with how soon you can fly home. That’s covered in general for any Bangkok procedure in the guide to flying after surgery in Thailand: eye surgery has its own specific air-pressure and follow-up considerations your surgeon should confirm before you book a return flight.
Why “the same procedure” costs so differently between clinics
Four things move the number more than the technique label alone:
- Hospital tier. A large international-patient hospital generally prices higher than a standalone eye clinic for the same technique, reflecting overhead, interpreter services and concierge support rather than a different surgical outcome. The tiers themselves are explained in the comparison of JCI, private and public hospitals.
- Laser platform and generation. Newer laser models (and newer SMILE software generations) often carry a 15-25 percent premium over an older but still current platform.
- Surgeon experience. A more senior or specialised refractive surgeon typically commands a higher fee than a general ophthalmologist performing the same procedure.
- What’s bundled. Pre-op mapping, both eyes versus one, every follow-up visit, and any enhancement (a touch-up procedure if the result under-corrects) may or may not be included in a headline price.
The honest risks and typical outcomes
No refractive procedure is risk-free, and no honest clinic promises a guaranteed result. Reported risks across all three techniques include dry eye (temporary for most, persistent for a minority), glare or halos around lights at night (usually fading over months, occasionally lasting longer), under- or over-correction requiring a touch-up procedure, and, rarely, a flap-related complication specific to the LASIK techniques (not a risk with SMILE, since it has no flap). Typical outcomes, not best-case ones: most patients achieve significantly reduced dependence on glasses or contacts, not a guaranteed 20/20 result for every eye and every prescription.

Questions to ask before you book
- Which specific technique are you quoting, and why is it the right one for my prescription and cornea?
- What does the price include: both eyes, all pre-op tests, every follow-up visit, and any enhancement if needed?
- What happens if I need a touch-up after the initial healing period?
- Who performs the surgery, and what’s their specific experience with this technique?
- What’s the realistic recovery timeline for my job and travel plans?
Planning a wider Bangkok medical trip around this procedure or others is covered in the medical tourism cost guide by procedure, with cross-procedure price context beyond eye surgery alone.

Common questions
Is ReLEx SMILE always better than LASIK?
Not automatically. SMILE treats a narrower range of prescriptions than LASIK and may suit certain corneas better, but LASIK (particularly Femto-LASIK) remains the right choice for many patients, including some prescriptions SMILE doesn’t currently treat. The right technique depends on your eyes, not a general ranking.
Why is Femto-LASIK sometimes priced close to standard LASIK and sometimes far higher?
Because the range reflects laser platform, hospital tier and what’s bundled into the quote, not just the technique label. Two Femto-LASIK quotes from different Bangkok clinics can differ by tens of thousands of baht for reasons that have nothing to do with the surgery itself.
How soon can I fly home after LASIK in Bangkok?
It varies by technique and by your surgeon’s own protocol, and it’s a question to ask directly before booking rather than assume; general timing considerations for flying after any Bangkok procedure are covered in the flying after surgery guide.
Does a higher price guarantee a better result?
No. A higher price can reflect a newer laser platform, a more experienced surgeon or a higher-overhead hospital, all of which are reasonable things to pay for, but none of them is a guarantee. Ask what specifically the higher price buys rather than assuming price alone signals quality.
