Cheap Flights to Bangkok: Best Months and Booking Traps
Cheapest months to book a flight to Bangkok from the UK, Ireland, India, the US and Australia, plus budget carrier, fare alert and hidden-city traps.

On this page
The cheapest time for a flight to Bangkok depends on where you start, but December is the most expensive month on four of the five routes checked here (India peaks in June), and the cheap months sit in February to May or September. Fare-comparison data from momondo (checked 9 October 2026) puts September at about GBP 544 from the UK, May at about EUR 587 from Ireland, February at about INR 22,071 from India, March at about USD 690 from Los Angeles and February at about AUD 994 from Sydney. This guide shows those numbers by origin, how to set up a fare alert, where budget airlines can cost more than they look, and why hidden-city tickets are a bad idea for this trip.
Which month is cheapest for a flight to Bangkok?
There is no single cheapest month, because each departure country has its own pattern. For four of the five origins the top of the price range is December. Here is what momondo’s Bangkok fare pages showed on 9 October 2026, each in the currency of that page.
| Flying from | Cheapest month (average fare) | Most expensive month |
|---|---|---|
| UK | September (about GBP 544), May close behind (about GBP 547) | December from London Heathrow (about GBP 951) |
| Ireland | May (about EUR 587), September next (about EUR 608) | December from Dublin (about EUR 1,017) |
| India | February (about INR 22,071), March similar | June from New Delhi (about INR 33,106) |
| US (Los Angeles) | March (about USD 690, 17% below average) | December (about USD 1,128, 36% above average) |
| Australia (Sydney) | February (about AUD 994, 13% below average) | December (about AUD 1,690, 48% above average) |
Two cautions about this table. First, these are averages computed by one comparison site, not a fare you can book today. Second, the US page contradicts itself: its FAQ names February for US departures with April as the alternative at about USD 895, while the Los Angeles figure points to March. Read the US row as “late winter to spring” rather than a single month.
For weather and crowds month by month, see the best time to visit Bangkok. If December is the only window you have, read Bangkok in December first and budget for the higher fare.
When should you book a flight to Bangkok?
The best lead time varies by origin. momondo’s own pages gave these “best time to book” figures:
- UK: about 87 days before departure, with fares around GBP 647 against a weeks-ahead average of about GBP 725.
- India: about 83 days.
- Australia (Sydney): about 63 days, with fares around AUD 1,138.
- US (Los Angeles): about 33 days.
- Ireland: about 20 days.
The range is wide, from 20 to 87 days, so treat it as a window to start watching, not a deadline, and track your own route rather than trust a single average.
Day of departure matters too, on the pages that state it. From the UK, Tuesday was the cheapest day to depart (lowest recent fare GBP 801) and Thursday the priciest (average GBP 863). From India and Australia, Wednesday was cheapest and Saturday priciest. Google’s own travel blog (James Byers, 5 September 2024) lists flying Monday to Wednesday instead of weekends as a general pattern that can lower fares, though it gives no data behind that claim.

How do you set up a fare alert that actually helps?
Pick the tool before the dates. Google’s travel blog (5 September 2024) describes four features that fit a Bangkok search:
- Explore map. Enter your home airport, leave the destination blank and tap Explore. The map shows prices from your airport, with filters for budget, trip length and flight duration. Useful when you are choosing between Bangkok and other cities.
- Date grid. With Bangkok set as the destination, it shows how the price changes if you shift your dates slightly,.
- Price graph. It shows how fares change over several months for the trip length you chose. Use it to spot the cheap month on your own route, which is more reliable than the averages above.
- “Any dates” tracking. For a set destination, Google emails you when prices are low for flights at any time in the next three to six months.
Once you have a trip planned, you can also track a specific itinerary. Google’s blog also mentions booking a refundable fare and rebooking if the price drops, with the advice to confirm the rule with the airline or booking provider first.
A practical routine: set “any dates” tracking six months out, use the price graph to find your cheapest month, then narrow to the date grid for that month. When an alert fires, check the same dates on the airline’s own site before paying.
Is a budget airline the cheapest way to fly to Bangkok?
Not always, and the answer depends on the whole bill rather than the headline fare. Several things change the total:
- Which airport. Bangkok has two. Secret Flying describes Don Mueang as dominated by low-cost carriers including AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air. Thai AirAsia X moved all flights back to Don Mueang on 1 October 2024 (Khaosod English, 17 July 2024). The momondo pages above price flights into Suvarnabhumi, so a comparison of a budget fare into Don Mueang against a full-service fare into Suvarnabhumi is not like for like once you add transfer cost and time.
- Baggage. AirAsia’s baggage page states a cabin limit of 7 kg (“No cabin baggage over 7kg”) and refers checked baggage to a separate fees page. Whether a checked bag is in your fare is a fare-by-fare detail, so add the bag before you compare.
- Changing airport on the day. Thai AirAsia announced a temporary suspension of its Suvarnabhumi services from 15 July to 30 September 2026, with a planned resumption on 1 October (July 2026 report; confirm the current status with the airline). The same airline can fly from either airport depending on the period, so read the airport code on your booking, not just the city name.

For the final leg into the city, compare the transfer from each airport on getting from the airport to central Bangkok. A cheaper fare into one airport only wins if the transfer does not eat the saving.

What does a full-service fare add?
When you price a budget option against a full-service airline such as Thai Airways (pictured), compare the total for the whole journey: fare, bags, airport transfer, and whether the trip is on one ticket (see the next section).

What is the self-transfer trap on cheap Bangkok fares?
Some cheap itineraries join two separate tickets with a gap in the middle, for example a budget flight to a regional hub and a second budget flight on to Bangkok. That is a self-transfer, and the risk is yours. Kayak and AirHelp, among others, describe the same rules:
- Each ticket is its own contract. If the first flight is late and you miss the second, the second airline generally has no duty to rebook or compensate you.
- Checked bags usually have to be collected and checked in again, because airlines do not transfer bags between independently booked flights.
- You are protected only when both flights are on one booking reference.
- Kayak cites a study in which a 30-minute delay caused 40% of self-connecting passengers to miss their onward flight. That is one study, so read it as a warning.
- On separate bookings you may need to clear immigration at the transfer airport, so check the visa rules for that country.
If you take a self-transfer anyway, leave a generous buffer for bags, terminal changes and security.

Why are hidden-city tickets a bad idea?
Hidden-city ticketing means booking a flight to a farther city and leaving the trip at the stopover, because the through ticket is cheaper than a ticket to the stopover itself. It is not a crime, but it breaks the airline’s contract, and Afar and NerdWallet both lay out the risks. The sourced rules are those of US airlines. American Airlines’ conditions prohibit reservations “made to exploit or circumvent fare and ticket rules”, and it can cancel the unused part of a ticket, refuse to carry you, decline a refund or charge you the fare you avoided. United’s contract lets it invalidate the ticket, cancel the rest of the itinerary, charge a seat-blocking fee, delete miles and “permanently ban or refuse to board the passenger”. Per the sources, all major US airlines prohibit it in their contracts of carriage.
For a trip to Bangkok the practical risks are the same:
- No checked bag. A bag goes to the final ticketed destination, so you cannot leave the flight at the stopover with a checked bag.
- Return legs. Skipping a segment can cancel the rest of the itinerary, and skipping the outbound leg of a round trip risks the return. Writer Gary Leff advises doing it only on one-way tickets.
- Rerouting. A delay or cancellation can send you through a different hub and break the plan.
- Loyalty accounts. Afar advises against linking a hidden-city ticket to a frequent flier account, because the airline may void the miles.
The rules above are those of US carriers; check your own airline’s contract of carriage. Book the ticket that goes where you are going.
What should you check before you book?
Before paying, run through these points:
- Passport and entry. Thailand’s Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced on 1 September 2026 that the 60-day visa exemption ends on 15 September 2026. Passport holders of 60 countries and territories, including Australia, Canada, Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States, may stay up to 30 days visa-exempt for tourism. Rules can change, so verify your own nationality’s allowed stay with the Thai embassy or the official Thai e-visa site (thaievisa.go.th) before you book dates.
- Onward ticket. The Thaiger (16 June 2026) says airlines and immigration officers regularly check for a return or onward ticket, and notes that short-term reservation services typically expire within 48 hours. That article predates the 30-day change, so confirm the current rule with your airline.
- Digital Arrival Card. The same Thaiger article says all foreign nationals must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before arrival, that it is free, and that the window opens 72 hours before arrival.
- Funds. The Thaiger gives a standard expectation of 20,000 baht per person (~USD 599 at 33.40 THB per USD, Thailand Business News, 30 September 2026).
- Airport on the ticket. Check whether your flight lands at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang, then plan the transfer.

How to book a cheap flight to Bangkok, step by step
- Set an “any dates” price alert from your home airport as early as six months out.
- Open the price graph and find the cheapest month for your route. Compare with the table above.
- Use the date grid to move your departure by a day or two, and test midweek days.
- Add the checked bag, and the cost of getting from the airport to your hotel, to every option.
- Prefer one booking reference for the whole trip. If you must self-transfer, leave a long buffer.
- Confirm entry rules and book a ticket that matches your planned stay.
- Check the airline’s own site for the same fare before paying, and keep the confirmation.

FAQ
What is the cheapest month to fly to Bangkok?
It depends on the departure country. In momondo’s data checked on 9 October 2026 it was September from the UK, May from Ireland, February from India and Australia, and March from Los Angeles. December was the most expensive month from London, Dublin, Los Angeles and Sydney; from New Delhi it was June.
How far ahead should I book a flight to Bangkok?
momondo’s suggested lead times ranged from about 20 days from Ireland to about 87 days from the UK. Start tracking prices around six months out and use the alert to pick the moment.
Is a hidden-city ticket to Bangkok safe?
No. It is not a crime, but US carriers prohibit it in their contracts and can cancel the rest of an itinerary, so you risk losing the return flight and your miles.
Do I need an onward ticket for Thailand?
The Thaiger (16 June 2026) says airlines and immigration officers regularly check for one. That article predates the 15 September 2026 change to a 30-day exemption, so confirm the current requirement with your airline and the Thai embassy before you fly.
