How to Use Grab in Bangkok: The Pin-to-Pickup Walkthrough

Setting up Grab in Bangkok, picking JustGrab, GrabCar, GrabBike or GrabTaxi, and fixing the pin-drift problem at malls and condos before it costs you a ride.

Open the Grab app, drop a pin where you actually are (not where the map thinks you are), pick JustGrab unless you have a reason not to, and confirm the fare before you tap book. That’s the whole system. The part that trips people up in Bangkok specifically isn’t the app, it’s the city: dense high-rises that confuse GPS, malls with six entrances that all look the same to a driver, and four different service types hiding behind one green button.

Before you land: set up the app right

Download Grab from the App Store or Google Play before you arrive rather than on arrival Wi-Fi at the airport. Registration needs a phone number for an SMS verification code, so either have Thailand roaming working or register with a number that can still receive texts abroad.

Add a payment method while you have a stable connection: a linked Visa, Mastercard or Amex, or the in-app GrabPay wallet, which can be topped up by card or, for residents with a Thai bank account, directly from apps like K PLUS or SCB Easy. Cash still works and is what most drivers expect if you haven’t linked a card, so don’t feel you need GrabPay on day one.

JustGrab, GrabCar, GrabBike, GrabTaxi: which one you’re actually getting

Tap “Car” or “Ride” in the app and you’ll see several options stacked on top of each other. They are not the same product.

Service What it actually is Best for
JustGrab Auto-dispatches whichever is nearest: a private car, a metered taxi, or occasionally a bike Default choice, fastest pickup, price locked before you confirm
GrabCar A private car booked directly, fixed fare shown upfront When you want to guarantee a car, not a taxi
GrabTaxi A metered street taxi booked through the app When cars are scarce or you’d rather pay the meter
GrabBike A motorbike taxi, one passenger, no boot space Short hops through stopped traffic, no luggage

JustGrab is the practical default: it quotes one locked fare, then hands your trip to whichever driver type is closest, so you’re not choosing blind. A short GrabCar hop across central Bangkok typically lands somewhere around 50-150 THB (~1.50-4.50 USD, checked September 2026), though the app always shows your exact fare before you confirm, so treat that as a planning range rather than a quote.

Booking a ride, step by step

  1. Open the app and let it locate you, or drop the pin manually if you’re not confident it has your exact spot.
  2. Enter your destination, either by typing an address or dropping a second pin on the map.
  3. Compare the service options shown (JustGrab, GrabCar, GrabBike, GrabTaxi) and their quoted fares.
  4. Confirm your payment method for this trip, cash or the card/wallet you’ve linked.
  5. Tap book. You’ll get a driver name, vehicle details, and a live map of them approaching.
  6. Use the in-app chat to send a landmark note if your pickup point is easy to miss.
  7. Match the plate number shown in the app to the car or bike that actually pulls up before you get in.

Why the driver ends up on the wrong side of the mall

This is the single most common Bangkok-specific Grab problem, and it’s a GPS issue, not a driver one. Signal bounces off dense high-rise clusters, the kind you get around Sukhumvit, Silom and Ratchada, and a pin dropped from inside a building can land you tens of metres from where you’re standing. Book from inside a mall like Terminal 21 near Asok (BTS E4, MRT Sukhumvit interchange) and the app may place you at a different entrance from the one you’re actually at.

Paying, cancelling and tipping

Cash, card and GrabPay all work mid-trip the same way: the fare shown at booking is what you pay, tolls the driver chooses to take included. Free cancellation runs for roughly the first two minutes after a driver accepts; cancel later and a small fee, typically in the 25-50 THB (~0.75-1.50 USD, checked September 2026) range, can apply. If the driver cancels on you, you’re not charged.

Tipping is not expected the way a fixed percentage might be elsewhere. The app offers a tip screen after some cashless rides; rounding up or adding 10-20 THB for a driver who handled heavy traffic or helped with bags is appreciated, not required. For how this compares with tipping across taxis, motorbikes and boats, see the Bangkok taxi and Grab guide.

Common questions

Is Grab cheaper than a metered taxi in Bangkok?

It depends on the route, traffic and any promotions running that day. What Grab guarantees isn’t a lower price, it’s a fare you see and agree to before the driver moves, which the taxi and Grab guide covers in more detail against street-hailed cabs.

Does my Grab fare include expressway tolls?

Yes, when the driver takes one to save time, the toll is added to your fare rather than negotiated separately. The mechanics of how much that adds and when it’s worth asking a driver to skip it are in Bangkok expressway tolls for riders.

Why did the driver call me instead of just arriving?

Usually because your pin doesn’t match what they can see on the ground, most often near a mall, condo or narrow soi. Answer if you can, or reply fast in the in-app chat with a landmark; it’s quicker than letting them circle.

Can I book a GrabBike with luggage?

Technically yes for a small bag, but it’s a poor fit for anything larger. A bike carries one passenger and no boot, so a suitcase or multiple bags means JustGrab or GrabCar instead.

How does Grab fit into a wider Bangkok transport budget?

For most visitors it’s one line among several: rail for the fixed-route legs, Grab for the rest. What transport actually costs in Bangkok prices out full scenarios rather than a single mode.

Pick the area before the hotel

Traffic and heat make Bangkok distances feel longer than they look on a map, so the area shapes a trip more than the hotel does. Our guides match areas to trip types and explain the trade-offs.
